This summer Zumper welcomed five interns in Design, Engineering, and Sales.
With shelter-in-place in order, the interns were given the unique opportunity to work remotely. This year’s interns dialed in from all over the country: New York, Florida, Nevada, and California.
Remote work poses its own set of challenges, but Zumper made the interns feel at home with virtual happy hours, monthly talks with the CEO, and one-on-one mentorship from their ZBuddies.
So what does a remote internship at Zumper look like? Let’s hear from one of the interns:
Name: Emma
Title: Mobile Engineer Intern
Dream apartment: A quiet studio in Portland, OR with lots of natural light and quality speakers for my record player.
This summer I worked with Zumper’s mobile team to implement a new iOS onboarding flow, enable Blueshift in-app notifications for Android and iOS, and upgrade both Zumper and Padmapper apps to the latest iOS 13 software.
This internship marks my first time working at a startup, and I’ve already fallen in love with the startup ecosystem and the great amount of product ownership awarded to engineers here. When I started at Zumper, I had zero experience in Android development, and already by the third day I was writing code in the Android codebase. In my second week, I attended Apple’s virtual WWDC conference to learn about new iOS 14 features. After the conference ended, we immediately started planning how we were going to apply these features to the Zumper app.
Zumper’s fast-paced, high-learning environment has made me a better engineer who learns fast, prioritizes new features, and adopts the latest tech stacks. I’m excited to take these skills to the next level as I pursue a career as an iOS engineer.
When I first started the remote internship, I had no idea how I was going to socialize with coworkers over a computer screen. Over time, I found creative ways to connect with my team virtually. One way I bonded with the Zumper team was by sharing my favorite Spotify playlists in the #music Slack channel and exchanging songs with other music lovers. My manager also organized biweekly game sessions where we would take a break from coding to play virtual board games. There was never a dull moment chatting with coworkers over Zoom chats or Slack channels, and I felt part of the Zumper family without ever having met them in person.
My favorite part of the internship was our monthly intern Zoom chats with the CEO. It’s not everyday that interns get to meet their CEO, let alone have hour-long conversations with them. So I was ecstatic when Anth put aside time every month to speak candidly with us interns. We talked about everything from life advice, to venture capital, to real estate trends. Zumper cares deeply about their interns, and their willingness to connect us with company leaders like Anth is a testament to that.
My summer at Zumper was one for the books. I’ve grown so much over the course of this internship and so has the Zumper product. Zumper is a force to be reckoned with and I am so lucky to be part of the Zumper family.
