The Most Expensive Cities
-Addison
At a median of $1,210 a month for a one bedroom apartment, Addison takes the spot for the most expensive city in Texas to rent. Addison’s rent is currently $380 more expensive than the $830 state median.
-Dallas
Only $20 behind Addison’s median rent, Dallas comes in second on this list of most expensive Texas cities with a median one bedroom rent of $1,190.
-Pearland & Sugar Land
Tied for third, Pearland and Sugar Land both have their median one bedroom rent at $1,150, which is $320 more expensive than the state median.
The Least Expensive Cities
-Copperas Cove
With the median one bedroom rent at $340, Copperas Cove is the least expensive, and most affordable, city in Texas. The rent in Copperas Cove is $490 least expensive than the state median and a staggering $870 less expensive than Addison, the most expensive city in Texas to rent.
-Killeen
Killeen is the second least expensive city in Texas, with a median one bedroom rent of $440. Killeen is currently $100 more expensive than Coppers Cove and $390 less expensive than the state median.
-Abilene
At $500 a month, Abilene is the third least expensive city to rent in Texas. It is currently $330 less expensive than the state median.
Cities With The Fastest Growing Rents
-Hurst
With a huge median growth rate of 15%, Hurst is the fastest growing city in Texas. It outpaces the state median of 2.4% by a whopping 12.6%. The median one bedroom rent here is currently $690, up $100 from last year.
-Galveston & San Angelo
Less than 1% behind Hurst, Galveston and San Angelo tie for second with growth rates at 14.3%. Both Galveston’s and San Angelo’s median one bedroom rent is currently $800, up over $100 from last year.
-Wells Branch
As the third fastest growing city in Texas, Wells Branch has a growth rate of 14.1%. The current median one bedroom rent here is $890, up $125 from last year.
Growth Comparison of The Most Populated Cities
-Austin
With a growth rate at 12%, Austin is the fastest growing city among the most populated Texas cities. Austin is currently ranked as the 5th most expensive city to rent in Texas and, according to the most recent Zumper national rent report, is also the 18th most expensive city to rent in the U.S.
-El Paso
With a growth rate at -10.9%, El Paso‘s median rent has the slowest growth rate among the most populated Texas cities. The difference between the state median growth rate and El Paso’s is 13.3%.
-Houston
As the most populous city in Texas, Houston surprisingly has a growth rate that is not only below the state median’s but is also negative, at -4.7%. However, Houston is still ranked as the 21st most expensive city to rent in the U.S.

The median rents of the 10 most populous cities in Texas vary greatly. The cities on this graph include both the second most expensive Texas city, Dallas, and one of the least expensive cities, El Paso.
More than half of the most populous cities in Texas have rent prices below the state median, so affordability does exist in the larger metro regions of the state.
