We recently released our Annual Renter Survey for 2017, which polled more than 14 thousand people in the United States. Nationally, there were some surprising highlights, but a deeper look into the data reveals even more at the city-level.

Nationally, the survey revealed that the median Annual Income among respondents was $48,000, and the median monthly rent was $1,195. Based on this data and a quick calculation, people are paying 30% of their income in rent. [Read more about the 30% rule here.]

However, due to lower median annual incomes and/or higher rents, some cities see a far higher burden in rent.

Charlotte, NC survey respondents came in as most rent burdened in the nation, spending 42% of their monthly income on rent. Miami and Fort Lauderdale in Florida both spend roughly 40%. Not far behind, San Diego, CA, Phoenix, AZ, Detroit, MI, Los Angeles, CA and San Jose, CA all came in above the national average.

Those surveyed in other cities are far less burdened:

2 rent burden by city

The above data is based on specific salary and rent/mortgage numbers provided by survey respondents in cities with the highest number of respondents and is not broken down by household vs. individual income nor by number of roommates/rooms.

Results were pulled from Zumper’s 2017 Annual Renter Survey for cities with a significant number of respondents based on supplied zip codes. Cities with low levels of responses were excluded to ensure data was representative. You can read the full report here: /blog/uploads/2017/09/ZumperAnnualRenterSurvey2017.pdf.
