The capital of California has been flying under the radar for years, consistently being overshadowed by the larger cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco. But Sacramento has a lot going for it, especially during a time when California is contributing 5 of the top 10 cities with the highest rent prices in the country, Sacramento excluded. Sacramento, with its tree-lined streets, ample waterways, and storied Gold Rush history is a truly unique place to live. Here’s what you need to know about California’s capital before moving there.

Farmtown

Farm to Table

If you didn’t already know it, you’ll notice once you move here that Sacramento is surrounded by farms. So many farms, in fact, that it’s been dubbed by city leaders as the “Farm-to-Fork Capital”. That means dining out in this city offers some fresh, local options. Grange Restaurant & Bar and TableVine are some of the best in town; their rotating menus are based off of what’s available and fresh, depending on the season.

It’s a Travel-Lover’s Dream

Sacramento is positioned in one of the best places in the state for weekend travel. In under two hours, you can be in Lake Tahoe, Napa Valley, or San Francisco. That means you can hit the slopes in the morning and enjoy a dinner in the City by the Bay or sip on a glass of vino in wine country during the evening.

It’s Called the Delta

Tubing on the Lake

The Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta may be its full name, but locals just call it the Delta. Throughout the summer months, and sometimes late spring and early fall, the Delta is the place to cool down. Locals bring their speed boats and pontoons out on the water, along with their jet skis, wake boards, and inner tubes. This unpretentious waterway offers plenty of fun in the sun and Sacramento knows exactly how to to advantage of it.

Prepare for Hot Summers

Sacramento gets hot…really hot. And by that, we mean this place has some intense, dry heat during the summer months. Average summer temperatures hover around 92 degrees, so be prepared for days that top 100+ degrees. Definitely keep a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen on hand, especially if you’ll be out on the Delta all day. Summer evenings, though, are some of the best around. Warm, summer nights are balanced by a cool Delta breeze, perfect for enjoying a drink outside on the patio or stargazing.

Take Advantage of the Shade

Trees in city

It’s known as the City of Trees for a reason: Sacramento has the most trees per capita than any other city in the world! So on those searingly hot summer days there’s sure to be a tree nearby ready to shade you from the heat. In fact, they even named a summer festival after its nickname, so you know this city takes it seriously.

Craft Beer is No Joke Here

This city takes its craft beer very seriously, as is evident by the sheer number of breweries both in Sacramento and the areas surrounding it. Porchlight Brewing Co., brand new to the scene, pours up some great beers at their tap room, plus it’s family and dog-friendly. Track Seven Brewing Co. has been at it for a few years, and they’ve put out more than 30 inventive beers, and there’s more on the way. Both breweries are located in Sacramento, along with plenty of other great options.

History Buffs, Rejoice!

Old Town Sacramento

Sacramento is home to some of California’s most storied history. The entire business district of Old Sacramento was designated a National Landmark in 1965 for its historical significance as the terminus of the Pony Express postal system. A stroll through the town now offers a view of more than 50 historic buildings, including the former home of the California Supreme Court.

The Sacramento History Museum has some pretty cool tours available. Their Underground After Hours tour gives you a look at what gold-seekers did in their down time. You’ll visit the saloons, gambling halls, theaters, and houses of ill-fame as your tour guide reveals the murders, gossip, and betrayal that took place during the Gold Rush. Hop on an authentic locomotive at the California State Railroad Museum and enjoy a 6-mile long trip around the Sacramento River.
